ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Sophomore
Joey Carbone scored once in each half to lead the Bard College men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Hartwick College on Saturday, giving coach T.J. Kostecky his first win at the helm.
Bard got on the board in the 10th minute.
Pat Devine collected a turnover at midfield, and played a long ball up the right wing to freshman
Dylan Jung. From a bad angle, it looked might Jung might cross the ball into the box, but he instead shot it and beat Hartwick keeper Aidan Wholihan (Annapolis, MD) to the short side for a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later,
Denton Lane, who was a menace all day for Bard, created a scoring chance on the right edge of the box, and his attempt was thwarted when the Hartwick keeper and a defender converged on him at the same time. But at the last possible moment, Lane pushed the ball through and off of both players to Carbone, who scored from the doorstep for a 2-0 lead.
At the half, Bard had outshot Hartwick, 8-6.
Hartwick (1-3) came out with more urgency in the second half and had the better of the possession, and it resulted in more opportunities, but the Hawks struggled to cash in. On one of Bard's counter chances, Jung made great play down the wing and got a cross into Carbone, who scored again from short range to give the Raptors (1-4) a 3-0 lead. A few minutes later, Carbone hit the crossbar with another shot.
In the final five minutes, Hartwick had a few excellent chances to score, but
Logan Leppo turned them away, making two particularly stellar saves to leave the guests frustrated and the sheet clean.
Hartwick outshot Bard, 15-14, in the game. Leppo finished with eight saves.
Up next for Bard is a non-league road game at Western New England on Tuesday.
