Men's soccer drops season opener to Nazareth

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In their opening match of the 2019 season, the Bard College men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Nazareth College Saturday, Aug. 31 at Ferrari Field.

Nazareth (1-0) got the scoring started in the 19th minute, when Sam Smyth (Pittsford, NY) deflected a cross from the right corner off the foot of Dan Serpe (Melville, NY) into the top left corner of the net to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Just over six minutes later, the visitors would add to their lead when Noah Malta (Rochester, NY) picked up a loose ball in front of the Raptor net following a deflection and put it off the crossbar and in to extend the lead to two goals. Dylan Rippe (Churchville, NY) added a goal just minutes before the end of the half off an assist from Zein Mohamed (Henrietta, NY), giving the Golden Flyers a 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Coming out of the break, the Golden Flyers extended their lead to four in the 52nd minute when Malta picked up his second goal of the afternoon on a strike from just outside the box, scoring the final goal on the day.

Junior goalkeeper Logan Leppo made nine saves on the day for Bard (0-1), while Nazareth landed 13 shots on goal.

The Raptors return to action Wednesday, Sept. 4, when they travel to Newburgh, N.Y. to take on Mount St. Mary College (N.Y.), with game time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
