Raptors split abbreviated series with Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. - With their playoff lives hopes hanging by a thread, the Bard College baseball team earned a key split of a doubleheader with Liberty League front-runner Clarkson on Tuesday.

What was supposed to be a four-game series last Friday and Saturday was diminished to a single doubleheader on Tuesday due to weather in Potsdam. Bard won the first game, 4-3, and lost the second, 15-2.

Clarkson stayed atop the league standings at 10-4, 15-12 overall; Bard is 7-11, 13-17 with just a four-game series at Rochester left in conference play.

Bard got off to a fast start in Game 1. Julian Gonzalez led off the game with a single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Esteban Rivera. In the top of the third, Gonzalez again led off with a single and stole second. He later scored on an RBI single by Chris Blake and it was 2-0 heading to the bottom of the third.

Bard starter Evan Richardson hadn't yielded a hit by then, but Clarkson put together a pair of doubles to cut Bard's lead to 2-1. Bard got a single run in the fourth on an RBI double by Rivera, and a single run in the fifth on an RBI double by Justin Fiume, so it was 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth of a seven-inning game.

Clarkson plated a pair of unearned runs to make it 4-3 in the fifth, but those two doubles Richardson gave up in the third turned out to be the only hits Bard would give up in all of Game 1. He went six innings, giving up one earned run, walking six and striking out four. Alex Bunnell tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for his first save.

Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, Rivera went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, while Fiume and Spencer Checkoway had two hits apiece. Bard stole five bases in the first game.

After being limited to two hits and three runs in the first game, Clarkson scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first in Game 2. The Golden Knights put up all 15 runs in the first four innings. Brad Pearson (Clifton Park, NY), Michael Mieczkowski (Hadley, MA) and Nolan Duda (Latham, NY) drove in three runs apiece.

Robert Arciola went 2-for-3 and drove in both of Bard's runs in Game 2.

Bard will next host a non-league doubleheader on Sunday vs. New Paltz. It'll be Senior Day.
