Raptors suffer doubleheader sweep at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team lost both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader at Union on Saturday, losing Game 1, 3-1, and Game 2, 6-5.

The story of the first game was Union starter Colin Nye (Salem, MA). The junior held Bard without a hit until Jordan Myers singled in the top of the seventh of a seven-inning game. Nye threw a complete game, striking out nine, walking one, and yielding just one run.

The Dutchmen got all the runs they needed on a two-run single by Matt Toy (Niskayuna, NY) in the bottom of the second. They added an unearned run in the fifth.

Nye's dominance spoiled a good start by Bard senior Evan Richardson, who threw a complete-game six-hitter, striking out five. His third strikeout of the day, in the third inning, was the 200th of his career.

Game 2 got off to a good start when Bard put up four in the top of the second. Chris Blake doubled, Rory Maglich walked, and Ryan Chipman reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore Justin Fiume then hit a grand slam - the first since Bard restarted the baseball program in 2013 - and quite possibly the first in the history of Bard baseball. (Baseball was a varsity sport from 1925 to 1937, but statistics were not kept.)

That chased Union starter Josh Garber (Bedford, MA), and reliever James Salemme (Durham, CT) took over.

Union got one back in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk, then put up four runs - all unearned - on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the third. It was 5-4.

Salemme settled in, and so did Bard starter Kyle Zigner, so it remained that way until the bottom of the seventh, when Union tacked on another run for a 6-4 lead.

Blake, who had already doubled twice, homered to lead off the top of the eighth, chasing Salemme and cutting the deficit to 6-5. With one out, Ryan Chipman singled, and Union went to sidewinding lefty Blake Newcomer (Stamford, CT). He struck out Fiume and Julian Gonzalez to get out of a jam and end the inning.

In the ninth, Alex Luscher reached on a one-out single, but Newcomer induced a fielder's choice, then struck out Blake to end the game.

Zigner gave up just two earned runs over 6.1 innings, taking the hard-luck loss. Alex Bunnell threw 1.2 innings of hitless relief. Blake went 3-for-5 with two double and a homer; Chipman, Fiume and Luscher each had two hits.

Union is 6-4 in league play, 10-10 overall. Bard is 6-8, 12-14.

The teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday in Annandale. Due to the forecast, first pitch has been moved from noon to 11 a.m. Follow it live right here.
