TROY, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team lost both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader at RPI on Saturday, losing Game 1, 5-4, and Game 2, 10-7.
Bard erased a 2-0 deficit in the first game in the top of the fourth, when
Robert Arciola drove in a pair with a two-run single. The Raptors went up 4-2 with two more runs in the top of the fifth, also with two outs, on RBI singles by
Esteban Rivera and
Rory Maglich. It remained 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, in a game scheduled for seven innings.
RPI loaded the bases with no outs against Bard starter
Evan Richardson, and a bases-loaded walk cut the lead to 4-3. After a strikeout, a sacrifice fly tied the game, and RPI walked off on an infield error.
Richardson (2-3) took the loss, striking out seven. Maglich went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Engineers jumped on Bard starter
Kyle Zigner in Game 2, putting up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, but Bard came back with six-run third. With two outs and a runner on third, freshman
Gunnar Schichtl struck out, but reached on a passed ball. That left to door open, and the Raptors rushed through it. A single and a walk loaded the bases, and
Dillon Daine cleared them with a three-run double. Rivera followed with a two-run homer, and Bard had a 6-3 lead.
Another double by Daine made it 7-3 in the fifth, but RPI put together a 7-run rally in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and two crucial errors. Bard was held to one hit over the final four innings.
Daine went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI for the Raptors, who fell to 7-10 overall, 1-5 in Liberty League play. RPI is 9-6, 5-1.
The teams meet again on Sunday, as another doubleheader is scheduled, this time at Honey Field. First pitch is at noon.
