ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In four Spring Break trips to Florida, the Bard College baseball team had won a grand total of three games.
This Spring Break was a lot more fun.
The Raptors completed a 4-1 trip to Florida with a 9-8 victory over Ripon on Wednesday afternoon. It was a wild one, as Bard went from being up 6-2 to being down 8-6 in the space of a few innings. But a three-run seventh and some great relief pitching sealed the deal.
Bard was down 1-0 in the bottom of the second when
Angelo Winings slapped a ground single through the middle to drive in two runs.
Robert Arciola followed with an RBI single, and
Julian Gonzalez's fielder's choice plated another run, making it 4-1 through two innings.
The Red Hawks (1-6) got one back in the third, but a run-scoring double by
Ryan Chipman made it 5-2 heading to the fourth.
Esteban Rivera's first career home run, a solo shot to left-center, made it 6-2 heading to the fifth. But Ripon scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead.
Bard started off the bottom of the seventh with consecutive singles from Winings, Arciola and Gonzalez to load the bases. Freshman
Gunnar Schichtl cracked a bases-clearing double to the wall in right-center, giving Bard the lead, 9-8.
Reliever
Alex Bunnell struck out four over the next two innings, yielding one hit, and he got the win to improve to 2-0.
Evan Richardson struck out two in the ninth to earn his first career save.
Winings finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Chipman, Arciola and Rivera had two hits apiece, Rivera adding his first career triple to go with his first career homer.
Bard (6-4) next returns home for the start of Liberty League play. A four-game set with Vassar is scheduled, the first two at Vassar on Saturday, then two more at Bard on Sunday. Follow all four games live right here if you can't attend.
