Bard sweeps Purchase to start Florida trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - A couple of Florida natives found the conditions to their liking, and the Bard College baseball team swept Purchase College, 5-0 and 9-1, in a doubleheader that kicked off Bard's Spring Break on Saturday.

Senior Evan Richardson, from Jupiter, Fla, tossed a one-hit complete game with 11 strikeouts, and senior Julian Gonzalez, from Miami, went 2-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs scored as Bard won 5-0 in Game 1, and 9-1 in Game 2.

Richardson was the story in Game 1, as he tossed a seven-inning complete game, striking out 11 and walking four. The Raptors were up 2-0 on a pair of unearned runs going into the top of the sixth. Gonzalez walked with one out and stole second. Gunnar Schichtl singled, putting runners at first and third, and Jordan Myers drove them both in with a double to left-center. Spencer Checkoway followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Richardson struck out five of the last six batters he faced. Checkoway and Chris Blake each finished with two hits. Myers and Checkoway each drove in two runs.

In Game 2, the Bard starter was the story again, as Kyle Zigner threw a seven-inning complete game two-hitter, striking out seven and walking four. In the bottom of the third, Gonzalez walked and moved to second a fielder's choice. Myers drove him home with a single, and it was 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Nikolai Grumet doubled to lead off, went to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Luscher to make it 2-1. Gonzalez doubled, Checkoway singled and both runners advanced on an error, making it 3-1. Myers walked, and Ryan Chipman singled to load the bases. A wild pitch advanced the runners and plated another run, then with two outs, Frank Rybicki singled to drive in a pair, making it 6-1.

Zigner was cruising. A double play in the top of the sixth helped. In the bottom of the sixth, Luscher singled, Gonzalez walked, and Andrew Roberge walked. Eswar Vinnakota smacked a pinch-hit two-run single to left-center, and Justin Fiume followed with a single to left to make it 9-1.

Zigner struck out the side in the seventh. Myers, Chipman and Rybicki each had two hits, while Rybicki and Vinnakota drove in two runs apiece. Ten different players had hits for the Raptors, who improved to 4-3 with the sweep. Purchase fell to 4-4.

Bard will stay busy on Sunday, playing a split doubleheader in Auburndale. They'll take on Hamilton at 12:30, then Nichols at 4. Since the games are split, both are scheduled for nine innings.
