Men's basketball tops RIT on Senior Day

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team completed its regular season Saturday afternoon, beating Rochester Institute of Technology, 62-54, on Senior Day.

The win coming on Senior Day was fitting, as the group of Armando Dunn, Merritt Miller, David Runcie and Jelani Bell-Isaac, saw more Liberty League wins than any group of seniors beforehand.

The victory also handed the Raptors their first winning season in program history at 13-12, while the nine wins in Liberty League play set a record for conference wins in a single season.

Entering the day, Bard had already punched its ticket to the Liberty League playoffs as the No. 6 seed regardless of the outcome of the game. However, following a four-game losing streak, the hosts wanted to enter the tournament with some momentum. While it wasn't the best game the Raptors played all season, the squad still managed to earn the win.

During the first 30 minutes, the action was back-and-forth throughout. In that time, the contest saw 13 lead changes and three tie scores, before the Raptors were finally able to pull ahead late and hold the advantage from there.

The turning point for the Raptors came exactly at the 10-minute mark, as they proceeded to outscore the Tigers of RIT, 10-0, over the next four minutes to go up, 49-40.

RIT answered by cutting the deficit to just four points (51-47) with just over five minutes to go, but Bard's defense was able to hold off the guests down the stretch.

In fact, the Raptors' defense stifled the Tigers throughout, as RIT shot just 32 percent and finished with 18 turnovers in the loss. Bard meanwhile, shot 38 percent and outscored the guests in points-off-turnovers (21-12) and fast-break points (8-0).

The Raptors finished with balanced scoring in the effort, as they had just two players finish in double figures. Justyn Rogers led the way with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Bell-Isaac, playing in his final home game, finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

As for Bard's other seniors, Dunn collected four points and seven rebounds, Miller added two points and two rebounds and Runcie finished with nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

For RIT, Matt Anderson (Bennington, VT) finished with a team-high 17 points.

Up next for the Raptors is their first-ever Liberty League playoff game. The team is set to travel west to take on No. 3 Hobart College on February 19th at 8 p.m. You can follow that contest right here via Live Stats and Live Video. With a loss, Bard would be eliminated from the tournament, but with a win, the team would advance to the Liberty League Semifinals and play No. 2 St. Lawrence next Saturday.
