MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bard College men's squash team made history on Saturday, edging Hobart College, 5-4, at the Wesleyan Round Robin.

It was historic because Hobart is the only Liberty League school not named Vassar that Bard has ever beaten. It was not a conference match, but nobody cares.

"We expected it was going to be close, and we practiced playing attacking squash all week," Bard coach Craig Thorpe-Clark said. "It paid off."

The Raptors knew that Hobart, due to injury, was only bringing eight players to the Round Robin. So the task was to win four of the eight remaining matches.

The key match was at No. 2, where Bard senior Artun Ak was taking on sophomore Cameron Temoyan (Gladwyne, PA). Ak gutted out the first two games, 12-10 and 17-15, before losing the third game, 11-2. He prevailed 12-10 in the fourth game to take a key point for the Raptors. Martin Graham defeated Archie Levis (Pittsburgh, PA) in four games at No. 4, Alex Luscher lost the first game, then rolled over Charlie Beall (Amherst, MA) in four games at No. 7, and John Michael Richards swept Jeffrey Wan (Greenwich, CT) at No. 8 to complete the victory.

"Artun's win was absolutely critical," Thorpe-Clark said. "Then we got great wins from Marty (Graham), JMR (Richards) and Luscher. It was another great team effort."

Earlier in the day, Bard lost a heartbreaker, 5-4, to Chatham University. But the win later over Hobart erased any lingering memories.
