RPI bests Bard in Liberty League opener

TROY, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team lost to RPI, 4-1, in the Liberty League opener for both teams on Saturday.

The hosts dominated from the start, controlling possession and creating pressure right away. Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA), a 6-foot-4 defender, headed in a corner from Michael Harten (Merrick, NY) in the fifth minute, and it was still 1-0 at halftime. RPI held Bard without a shot in the first half.

With Bard opening up to try and find an equalizer, more offensive chances were created on both ends of the field in the second half. In the 51st minute, Naka O'Connor fed Antonio Scanni on the left wing, and his low shot to the far post rolled just wide. But RPI's next offensive effort led to a goal by Austin Betterly (Plymouth Meeting, PA), who punched in a rebound in the 53rd minute off a shot saved by Bard keeper Logan Leppo.

In the 61st minute, Bard's Alec Meci's header went just over the crossbar, an opportunity that would have cut the lead in half.

A miscommunication in back led to a third goal for RPI in the 75th minute, Tomasso Valagussa chipping a shot over an onrushing Leppo from the top of the box.

Bard's lone goal came off a great pass from Antonio Scanni and a great finish by O'Connor. Scanni struck a long cross from the right wing to the far post, and O'Connor one-timed it to the far post to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Engineers (3-4-1, 1-0-0 Liberty League) added a final goal in the 86th minute, freshman Billy Chissoe (Gig Harbor, WA) putting one past Leppo off a feed from classmate Paul Silva (Wayne, NJ). RPI outshot Bard (3-5-1, 0-1-0), 21-4. Leppo made six saves.

Up next for Bard is a Liberty League match at home vs. Vassar on Wednesday night. Follow it live right here.
