Late-game heroics lift Raptors over SUNY Canton

CANTON, N.Y. - As New York Yankees' legend Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

That quote embodied the performance of the Bard College men's soccer team Sunday afternoon, as the squad rallied to tie the game in the final seconds of regulation, before snatching the win over SUNY Canton, 2-1, in overtime.

"The belief of this group is fantastic," said head coach Brandon Jackson after the win. "To go down on the road, after traveling 4-5 hours and then get the win, this team never gives up."

The Raptors' chances were on life support entering the final minute, as the Roos of Canton had controlled the game most of the 90 minutes. As the seconds waned, Bard earned a free kick just beyond the midfield line in the Roos' defensive half.

With 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Bard's keeper, Logan Leppo came charging up to take the kick, as the 10 other Raptors filled the box for a potential cross. As Leppo unleashed the kick, players on both sides crashed the box in hopes of getting a touch on the ball.

However, in all the chaos, Canton's keeper failed to locate the ball. Leppo's shot landed right in front of him and bounced over his hands into the top left corner, tying the contest for Bard.

Following the goal, the game came to halt, as the referees convened for a 15 minute meeting about the strike. Canton argued that the clock should have run out following the foul, meaning Bard wouldn't have had time to take the free kick as a result. However, video replay is not available for officials to use, so the goal was upheld.

Both sides were shocked as they headed to overtime.

A little over a minute into OT, Leppo punctuated his fantastic game with a crucial save on a breakaway attempt.

A couple minutes later, off a corner kick, Isaac Yelchin put away a ball that bounced around in the box for a moment to hand the Raptors the win.

Leppo finished the contest with a career-high nine saves. Jackson said afterward that the sophomore keeper "did everything he could to win the game."

"He has been amazing on and off the field for us," Jackson added.

For Canton, Mouhammed Thiam (New York, NY) collected three saves in the loss, while Brett Anderson (Seneca Falls, NY) scored for the Roos in the 52nd minute.

With the win, Bard improved to 2-0, while Canton fell to 1-1.

Up next for the Raptors is a home contest with Mount Saint Mary College on September 5th at 5:30 p.m. You can follow it right here.
