Raptors finish season with pair of losses at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team was defeated twice by Vassar College Sunday afternoon, as the team wrapped up its 2018 season.

The Raptors lost the first contest, 4-2 and the second, 14-6.

With the losses, Bard finished 15-22 overall and 8-15 in the Liberty League. Vassar College meanwhile, improved to 18-17, 11-10 and clinched its spot in the Liberty League playoffs next week.

The Vassar bats started the afternoon hot and remained that way throughout the day. The hosts took an early lead on RBI singles in the first inning, before a Jake Doyle (Seaford, NY) RBI double in the third pushed the lead to 3-0.

The Raptors were able to cut into the deficit in the fourth, when Chris Blake drove in two runs on a single to left field. However in the fifth, Vassar added a run to extend its advantage to 4-2, leaving Bard in a hole late.

The guests were unable to mount a comeback over the final two innings, as the contest finished 4-2 in Vassar's favor.

Kyle Zigner (3-2) picked up the loss for Bard. He tossed a six-inning complete game, during which he allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits.

John Madsen (Needham, MA) picked up the win for Vassar, while Max Spencer (San Diego, CA) collected the save.

Jordan Myers and Jeff Goldrosen each finished with two hits in the Game 1 loss.

In Game 2, Vassar picked up right where it left off, as the Brewers scored six runs in the first three innings. The Raptors did cut the deficit in half in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from David Schlosser and Matt Lasky, but that was as close they would get.

Vassar added three runs in sixth, three in the seventh and two more in the eight to blow the game open late.

On the mound, starter Frank Ortega (4-5) took the loss for the Raptors. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over his three innings of work.

Vassar's starting pitcher, Joe Conti (Bloomingburg, NY) collected the win and improved to 4-1 on the year. Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) finished with three hits and two RBIs for the hosts, while Matt Hernandez (Corona, CA) also tallied three hits.

Rory Maglich and Lee Perry each recorded three hits in the effort, while Ryan Chipman and Schlosser both finished with two hits for the guests.

Despite the losses to end the year, the 2018 season will go into the record books for the Raptors, as the team finished with the most overall wins (15) and league wins (8) in program history.

The Raptors will return to action in March 2019.
