ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team split a pair of Liberty League games with Vassar College Saturday afternoon, as the team celebrated Senior Day.
The Raptors won the first contest, 2-0, before falling in the second game, 13-9. With the split decision, Bard's record moved to 15-20 overall and 8-13 in the Liberty League. The Brewers of Vassar College meanwhile, improved to 16-17 and 9-10.
Before the game, the Raptors took a moment to honor their nine graduating players with a ceremony, pictures and framed jersey presentations. The class of nine included, Steve Marotta, Matt Lasky, Lee Perry, Zach Hayes, David Schlosser, Jeff Goldrosen, Mike Pizzuto, Caleb LaRosa and Michael Duffy..Â
After the Raptors celebrated their graduating class, the team had to quickly shift to game mode. For much of Game One, the contest was scoreless as neither side could manufacture runs on the other.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the fifth inning, until Bard was finally able to break through. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Pizzuto, who delivered at the perfect time.
He smacked a two-out single to center field to score two runs in the bottom of the inning, as Bard got all the run support it would need.
Evan Richardson carried the Raptors the rest of the way, as he threw his third complete game of the season. The junior finished with just five hits allowed and three strikeouts.
Logan Williams (Ambler, PA) picked up the loss for Vassar, after he allowed the two runs on seven hits over five innings of work.Â
Jordan Myers and Esteban Rivera each collected two hits and scored a run in the win for Bard.Â
In Game 2, things started nicely, as Rory Maglich doubled in two runs in the bottom of the first to give the Raptors an early advantage.
Unlike in the first game, Vassar responded as the bats came alive for the guests. The Brewers notched five runs in the third to secure their first lead of the day, before Goldrosen cut into that advantage by scoring off a Nikolai Grumet sacrifice fly, making the game 5-3.
That was as close as the Raptors would get the rest of the way however, as the Brewers exploded for five runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Lasky scored Schlosser on a groundout in the sixth for the only Bard run over that span, leaving the hosts in a 13-4 hole entering the ninth inning.
The Raptors didn't go down without a fight though. Perry slapped an RBI single, Myers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Schlosser, Lasky and Pizzuto all drew bases loaded walks to make the game, 13-9.
The comeback attempt was finally extinguished with the tying run at-bat, as Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) was able to strike out Goldrosen and pick up the save.Â
Matt McGannon (Redding, CT) earned the win for Vassar, while Marotta collected the loss for Bard. Maglich, Schlosser, Perry and Goldrosen each collected two hits in the effort.Â
Rubin, Evan Trausch (San Diego, CA) and Daniel Bonfiglio (New York, NY) each finished with three RBIs for Vassar.
Up next for the Raptors is one final doubleheader, as the team takes on Vassar College tomorrow afternoon (May 6th) in Poughkeepsie. First pitch is set for noon and you can follow the games here.Â
