RPI fights off Bard; Tran sets single-game record with 20 saves

TROY, N.Y. - The RPI women's lacrosse team broke open a close game with a late run, and the Engineers fought off Bard College, 15-6, in a Liberty League game on Saturday afternoon.

RPI outshot Bard, 21-6, in the first half, but Bard's deficit was 5-2 after 30 minutes, thanks to 11 saves from Kaylynn Tran in the first 30 minutes.

The Raptors made things interesting deep into the second half. A pair of goals 13 seconds apart - unassisted tallies by Nicole Ellin and Dylan McDonald, respectively - cut RPI's lead to 5-4, and prompted an RPI timeout with 23:53 left in the game.

The Engineers responded with a pair of goals, but Caleigh DeCaprio's unassisted goal trimmed Bard's deficit to 7-5 with 10 minutes left. A run of seven straight goals for RPI followed - including three with a woman-up - and the Engineers improved to 7-5-1 overall, 5-4 in Liberty League play.

Senior Allie Claroni (Reading, MA) led RPI with three goals and an assist.

Nicole Ellin led Bard (3-9, 0-8) with two goals and assist. DeCaprio finished with two goals, while McDonald had a goal and six draw controls. Casey Witte scored once. Melissa Rosenthal had an assist, three draw controls and four ground balls.

Tran finished with 20 saves, which broke her own single-game record.

Up next for the Raptors is the final home game of the season, against Vassar on Wednesday evening. It'll be Senior Night for Tran, Molly Woolery and Hannah Baird. Follow it via Live Stats or Live Video if you can't make it.
