ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team lost to Castleton University, 14-4, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
The Raptors fell to 4-7 on the year, while the Spartans of Castleton improved to 5-6.Â
The first inning started with a bang for the guests, as Dillon Benham (Lenox, MA) tripled in a run in just the second at-bat of the game. Benham scored during the next at-bat, following a Bard fielding error.
Later in the inning, another error allowed two additional Spartan runs to score, which pushed Castleton's advantage to 4-0.Â
In the second, Davis Mikell (Williston, VT) singled in two runs, before the guests added another pair of runs in the fourth inning to double their lead at 8-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Raptors were able to cut into the deficit, thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Lasky and Lee Perry. Nikolai Grumet punctuated the scoring run by knocking in the two with a standup triple to cut the score in half, 8-4.Â
However, that was all Bard's offense could manage on the afternoon. Over the final three innings, the visitors added six more runs to pad their win.
Charles Stapleton (Vergennes, VT) collected the win for the Spartans. He went six innings, allowed four runs on three hits, while walking eight and striking out eight. He exited after throwing an incredible, 130 pitches.Â
On the other side, Evan Richardson finished with the loss for Bard. He threw four innings, while allowing eight runs (only two earned) on four hits. He also struck out six and walked five.Â
Jordan Myers finished with a single and a walk for the Raptors, while Julian Gonzalez walked twice and scored a run.
Benham powered Castleton with two hits, three RBIs and three runs in the win.
