AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Worcester State University baseball team scored 13 runs in the first three innings and went on to defeat Bard College, 18-8, in a non-league game on Tuesday morning.
The Lancers (2-8) jumped on Bard starter Steve Marotta (0-1) with two runs in the first, then scored five in the second on four hits and three errors.
After Chris Blake got Bard on the board with a solo homer in the bottom of the second, Worcester State put up six more runs in the top of the third to make it 13-1. In the fifth, freshman Evan Fritze (Spencer, MA) belted a grand slam, so it was 17-1 through five innings. The Lancers tacked on an unearned run in the eighth.
Bard (4-5) got an RBI single from Esteban Rivera in the bottom of the eighth, then scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the ninth. Peter Oberg, Mike Pizzuto, Michael Uhle, Eric Diaz and Ryan Chipman drove in runs in that inning.
Matt Irzyk (Westfield, MA) got his first win of the season for the Lancers, holding Bard to one run on three hits over six innings. Mike Ferrara (Easton, MA) and Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, CT) drove in three runs apiece.Â
Schlosser went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Raptors. Chipman went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Bard's Florida trip will wrap up on Wednesday. The Raptors will play Thomas College of Maine at 10 a.m., before returning home to play three games at Honey Field this weekend.
