ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team lost its home opener against Wilson College, 3-1, Saturday afternoon, before falling in straight sets to Keuka College later in the day.
Set scores against Wilson were 25-20, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-18.
The Raptors put together a solid opening set, hitting .348 in the frame, while committing just two errors. Unfortunately for Bard, the Phoenix of Wilson College hit even better in the frame, managing 17 kills on a .361 percentage.
In the second set, Wilson continued to flourish hitting the ball, finishing with a .500 hitting percentage. The third set saw Bard rally from an early deficit to pull out a close victory over the visitors, but in the fourth and final set, Wilson got back on track and outpaced the Raptors.
Stefan Briggs led Bard with 13 kills and 12 digs, while
Tyler Zowaski added 12 kills and seven digs in the loss.
Josh Kim set a new career-high with 26 assists and
Tristan Kozul finished with a team-high 14 digs.
For Wilson, Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, PA) and Nick Baxter (Denver, PA) powered the team to victory with 24 kills and 16 kills respectively. Ian Firestone (York, PA) finished with a game-high 51 assists.
In the middle contest, Wilson topped Keuka 3-1, before the Wolves of Keuka came back to beat Bard 3-0 in the final game of the day. Set scores against Keuka were 25-15, 25-13, 26-24.
For the second straight match, the Raptors finished the opening set with solid hitting totals. Bard collected eight kills on a .261 percentage, but were again outhit by the opposition.
Keuka finished with 13 kills on a .385 hitting percentage in the opening set win. The second set was a blaze for the Wolves, as they scorched their way to a .407 hitting percentage and the easy set win.
In the third and final set however, Bard did not go down without a fight. The team rallied from four different four-point or more Keuka rallies, including late in the match down 17-12. The Raptors scored six straight to grab the lead at 18-17, before another four point rally put the Raptors back in a hole.
Bard responded with a four point rally of its own, retaking the lead, 22-21. Keuka then scored three of the next five points to notch the score at 24-24.
From there, the rally fizzled as the Wolves scored the next to points to win the set and match.
Zowaski finished with a team-high seven kills, while Kim collected 14 assists. Kozul added 11 digs in the effort.
On the other side, Matthew See (Oswego, NY) recorded a game-high 15 kills for Keuka.
Up next for Bard is a trip to Mahwah, NJ, as the Raptors take on Ramapo College on February 10th at 11 a.m.
