Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Raptors snap streak with electrifying Senior Night victory

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team snapped a long losing streak with a 63-54 victory over Purchase in a non-league game. Bard is 1-22.

Bard played angry from the start, as if a couple of seasons worth of simmering frustration was about to boil over. Senior Elena LeFevre, one of three seniors honored before this, their last home game, scored 13 of Bard's first 15 points. She hit jumpers, layups with the left hand, layups with the right hand ... she was unstoppable and the boisterous Bard student section created an electrifying environment that was pulsating with each Bard basket.

Bard led 15-9 after one quarter, then scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 22-9 lead. But Purchase's constant pressure started to wear the Raptors down, and Bard's lead at halftime was just 29-23. This wasn't going to easy.

Purchase cut the deficit to four early in the third quarter. Bard pushed it back to 13. Purchase cut it again to six. Bard pushed it back to 11.

Every time Purchase made a run, Bard had an answer. In one case it was a put-back by Alexis Akingbade; in another case it was a banked three-pointer by Sarah Morris; and perhaps the biggest shot all night was Erin Kennedy's three-pointer with 39 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 45-34.

The Raptors opened the fourth quarter with a short jumper from Akingbade, a layup by Kennedy and another three-pointer by Morris, and it was 16-point bulge with 7:04 left in the game. It felt like it might be time to celebrate.

But it wasn't. Purchase went on a 14-5 run, and the Raptors' lead had shrunk to 55-50 with 1:57 remaining. Gulp.

Morris had a clutch steal on Purchase's next possession and Katie Esposito cashed in with a fast break layup. As the clock wound just under a minute, Morris hit one free throw: 58-50. Then Caleigh DeCaprio put the game away by making three of four free throws in the final 25 seconds, and this time, it actually was time to celebrate.

In her final home game, LeFevre scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and threw in a block and a steal for good measure. DeCaprio had 10 points and nine rebounds, Morris had nine points, 11 rebounds and five steals, and Kennedy was key off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Esposito added six points and eight rebounds, and Akingbade finished with six points and five rebounds.

It was fitting that it took everyone to win the game. Even senior Clover Stieve, hampered by a foot injury, had one block in six minutes of action.

Purchase got 23 points from Kayla Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) and 13 points and 17 rebounds from Nyasia Harris (South Fallsburg, NY). The Panthers are 9-14.

Bard has two games left on the 2017-18 schedule, on the road against two of the best teams in the conference. The Raptors will be at Ithaca on Friday night, then wrap up the season on Saturday at RIT. So maybe it won't be a season to remember.

But Monday night's performance gave the Raptors a game to remember.
