ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's soccer lost a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Knights of Clarkson University topped the Raptors, 1-0, in double overtime.
The Raptors played arguably their best game of the entire season against Clarkson, controlling the tempo, possession and pressure throughout the contest. It wasn't until the second overtime things changed, as Bard was playing a player down, following a red card send off late in the first OT.Â
The lone goal of the day came with a little over five minutes remaining, after Clarkson received possession near midfield. The Golden Knights sent the ball down the right wing to Giulia Mahoney (Walworth, NY), who collected and dribbled it into the box. As Bard defenders crashed over toward her, Mahoney lost control of the ball momentarily.
As the ball popped free,
Abigail Stanley sprinted forward to try and grab it before Mahoney could regain possession, but was too late. Mahoney was able to stretch her leg out just far enough to cross the ball into the middle of the box, where Camryn Careccia (Watervliet, NY) was waiting to tap in the game winner.Â
As the Clarkson bench erupted with cheers, the Raptors left the field with their heads held high following the physically tough match.
Earlier in the day, it was the Raptors who produced the best chances on goal, as the hosts just couldn't get the strike they needed. In the 22nd minute, Bard had three straight point-blank chances stuffed off a corner kick, including a goal-line clearance save from a Clarkson defender.Â
Just moments before Clarkson scored the winning goal, the Raptors had a tremendous chance of their own to win the game, as the hosts broke free for a fast break attempt, but
Dylan McDonald's shot went just wide to the right.Â
On the day, Bard outshot Clarkson, 18-10 overall and 8-5 on goal. Stanley finished with four saves for Bard, while Elyse Green (Wilton, NY) tallied seven saves in the win.
Up next for Bard is a home matchup with Union College on October 17th. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow it right here.Â
