ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team had a field day Saturday afternoon, dominating Green Mountain College, 5-0, to secure its third win of the season.
The Raptors (3-1) opened the day with a golden chance, as
Brendan Byrne earned a penalty kick in the 10th minute following a Green Mountain (0-2) foul in the box.
Byrne, however, was denied on the attempt, as Mountaineers' goalie, Griffin Shelor (Ceder Park, TX) guessed correctly and punched the ball away diving to his right.
Following the saved penalty, Bard's offense really began to find its rhythme. The Raptors created numerous chances to break the deadlock but Shelor was called upon to make save after save for the visitors to keep the score tied at 0.
Bard wouldn't be denied on the day though, finally breaking through in the 33rd minute thanks to
Jackson Barratt Heitmann. The senior collected a loose ball in the box following a Raptors' cross and first-timed it past the keeper into the right side of goal to give Bard the lead, where it would remain entering halftime.
Right before the halftime whistle, an incident happened that resulted in each team having a player receive a red card, which meant it was 10-10 the entire second half.
The extra space and the fact that Green Mountain had no subs to enter the game really opened things up for Bard over the final 45 minutes.
In fact, just two minutes into the second half,
Emlyn Ellerby found the back of the net on an easy tap-in following a corner. 10 minutes later, freshman
Jonathan Raefski scored the first goal of his Bard career, thanks to a great cross from Ellerby.
The Raptors added two more insurance goals thanks to
Antonio Scanni (penalty) and
Angelo Chammah.
Logan Leppo made a save and collected the win in his first ever collegiate action for Bard, while Shelor finished with 14 saves for Green Mountain.
Total shots in the game heavily favored Bard, as the hosts peppered the net, 49-6.
Up next for the Raptors, a week of rest before the team takes on SUNY Poly at home on September 16th. Kick-off begins at 2 p.m. and you can follow it right here via Live Stats and Live Video.
