ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team suffered a tough loss to the Wildcats of SUNY Poly Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 in overtime on a golden goal strike.
The goal came in the 94th minute, after Pablo Rojas (Norwich, NY) received a cross-field pass and raced down the right sideline toward goal.
As he neared the outer right side of the box, Rojas sent a cross in just high enough that Bard's keeper,
Taylor Bond, couldn't get a hand on it.
Bond was left alone with Emir Selimovic (Utica, NY), who was waiting on the left side of the goalie's box to tee off on the pass.
After a single bounce off the pitch, Selimovic first-timed the ball with power and breezed it back across goal into the right side of net.
As the whistle blew, Bard players fell to the ground in disappointment, while SUNY Poly players rushed the field following the team's first victory of 2017.
With the loss, the Raptors fell to 3-2. SUNY Poly now stands at 1-4 on the season.
As the box score indicates, the game was a true back-and-forth struggle that could have gone either team's way in the end. Shots on goal were identical between the two squads with five each.
Bard had a slight edge on corner kicks at 8-3, but were unable to capitalize on the chances.
The Raptors best scoring opportunity came in the 36th minute, when
Alex Meci had his shot saved by SUNY Poly's defense on the goal line.
Meci beat Poly's keeper in the box, but the effort from the goalie and the surrounding defense forced the freshman to shoot sooner than he wanted.
As a result, Meci didn't get a ton of power on the shot and as the ball rolled toward goal, a Poly defender slid over and pushed the ball away to save the clean sheet for the visitors.
Alexander Gigliotti (Burnt Hills, NY) recorded five saves and the win for the Wildcats, while Bond tallied four saves for Bard.
Up next for the Raptors is one more non-conference game before Liberty League play kicks off next weekend. Bard will travel to Springfield, MA on September 19th to take on Western New England University at 4:30 p.m.
