ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team beat Lehman College in the home opener Tuesday night, to secure its first win of the season.
The Raptors won in straight sets, 25-8, 25-12 and 25-23.
Following a dominating performance in the opening frame, Bard (1-4) played tighter contests in the second and third sets. However, the result was never truly in doubt for the hosts.
In fact, the Raptors led the entire first and second sets of the match and never trailed by more than four in the third set.
Jewel Smith finished with a season-high 16 assists for Bard, while also adding four kills, a new career-high for the sophomore.
Alexis Akingbade led all players with eight kills in the match,
Philippine Alba added six kills and
Kaylynn Tran recorded an impressive six aces in the win.
Overall, the Raptors finished with a .169 hitting percentage, while the visitors could only muster -.133. Errors kept Lehman in the game much of the time, as Bard recorded 19 miscues to Lehman's 14.
Caitlin Vernon (Ozone Park, NY) led the way for the Lightning (0-2) with four kills and nine digs.
Up next for Bard is Sarah Lawrence College on September 9th at 11 a.m. The game marks the first of seven straight road contests for the Raptors.
