SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon, falling to Skidmore College, 8-0 in Game One and 14-5 in Game Two.
The losses moved the Raptors to 8-12 overall, 3-5 in the Liberty League and Skidmore used the wins to jump to .500 at 9-9 overall and 4-6 in conference play.Â
Game One was tough for Bard's offense, as the team only managed two hits in the contest.
The game began as a pitcher's duel, as
Kyle Zigner and Jacob Berish (Sharoon, MA) each threw three scoreless innings to start the afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds of Skidmore broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Mat Marino (Mamaroneck, NY) reached base on an error and advanced two bases on wild pitches from Zigner.
Pat Geiger (East Brunswick, NJ) doubled to the right field side to score Marino to give the hosts all they would need in the game.Â
In the fifth and sixth innings, Skidmore would pad its lead with seven more runs to move the score to 8-0.Â
The Raptors only real scoring chance of the first game came in the second inning, following three straight walks. With the bases loaded,
Lee Perry came to bat with two outs, but hit an 0-1 pitch to the second baseman for the force out at second.Â
Zigner, despite a solid outing, was issued the loss for Bard. He went four and two-thirds innings, allowed five hits and three runs (two earned).Â
Berish earned the win for Skidmore, as he threw a complete game, with just two hits and five strikeouts.Â
While Game Two saw the Raptors put up some runs compared to the first game, they still struggled to contend with the bats of Skidmore.Â
The hosts continued their hitting dominance from Game One, as they built up a 10-0 lead through six innings in Game Two.
The top of the seventh inning finally saw the Raptors break their scoreless streak, as the visitors put up four in the frame. A
Jeff Goldrosen single, a
Jack Hawke double and a
Quinn McInerney single tallied the runs in the inning.
Raptors' starter,
Frank Ortega, was able to go just two and two-thirds innings in the game, as he allowed six earned runs on seven hits.Â
Spencer Anderson (Newton, MA) threw six and two-thirds innings for the Thoroughbreds, allowing just four hits and two earned runs.Â
McInerney finished the day with two RBIs and Goldrosen added a hit, an RBI, a run and two walks in the loss.Â
Josh Brown (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) homered twice for the hosts, en route to three RBIs in the win.Â
Up next for the Raptors is a four game series with Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY starting on April 14th. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and you can follow those contests right here.Â
