SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team was defeated by Union College twice Sunday afternoon, falling in Game One by the score of 5-1 and 19-2 in Game Two.
The losses dropped the Raptors' record to 8-20 overall for the year and 3-13 in Liberty League play. Bard has now lost 11 straight games. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen of Union improved to 16-10, 11-5.
While Bard did enjoy its first home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line courtesy of outfielder
Jack Hawke, it was the only run the team would score during Game One.
The dinger came in the the top half of the third inning, tying the score at one, following Sean Cullen's (Ridgewood, NJ) RBI groundout in the bottom of the second for Union.
The tie score didn't last long though, as the Dutchmen put up two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth.
The Raptors had two great chances to score runs late in the game, as they loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't knock in any runs on either occasion.
Kyle Zigner (0-5) picked up the loss for Bard, after he went four innings, giving up seven hits and four runs.
Andy Labeck (Valley Stream, NY) picked up his first win of the season for the Dutchmen, following his five inning, three hit and one run allowed outing.
Jeff Goldrosen recorded a hit and two walks in Game One for Bard. Kent Curran (Eden Prairie, MN) finished with two doubles, two runs and an RBI for Union.
While Game One might have been a close contest right down to the final at-bat, Game Two was not.
The Dutchmen offense exploded for 10 runs in the first inning alone, en route to 19 runs in the contest.
Bard did manage two runs in the game, the most runs they had scored all weekend, thanks to RBI singles from
Dylan Long and
Caleb LaRosa, but it was not the offense performance the team was hoping for.
Raptors' starting pitcher,
Steve Marotta (0-5), was issued the loss. The junior allowed five hits, 10 runs (six earned) and two walks before being replaced after getting just two outs in the bottom of the first.
Josh Garber (Bedford,MA) (2-0) picked up the win for Union. He went six innings, allowed six hits, gave up two runs and struckout four.
Long and LaRosa each finished with an RBI and two hits apiece for Bard, while Union had 10 players record an RBI in the game.
Up next for Bard, is a single, non-conference game against Mount Saint Mary College. The game is scheduled for April 26th at 4 p.m. at Honey Field and you can follow it right here via Live Stats and Live Video.
