KINGSTON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's lacrosse team lost to 15th-ranked William Smith College, 15-1 Friday evening, as Raptors' goalie,
Kaylynn Tran set a new school record for saves in a game.Â
Tran collected 16 saves on the night, breaking her previous mark of 15 saves set against Clarkson back in April 2015.Â
Even with Tran setting the saves mark, the Herons of William Smith weren't going to be denied on the evening, as they put on a display showing why they are one of the top-ranked teams in the nation. Â
Two goals in the first two minutes of the contest allowed the Herons (7-1, 1-0 Liberty League) to jump out to an early lead, but from there, Bard's defense tightened up.
Following the two opening goals, the Raptors (3-2, 0-1 LL) allowed just three other goals over the next 22 minutes, as William Smith looked frustrated by Bard's man-to-man defensive strategy.Â
However, the problem on the night for the Raptors wasn't their defense, it was their offense, as the Herons' defensive intensity matched Bard's, holding the hosts to just two shot attempts in the opening 30 minutes.Â
Things finally began to open up late in the first half, once William Smith broke through the Raptors' defensive, allowing the visitors to score six goals over the final seven minutes of the frame to take an, 11-0 lead into halftime.
The Herons scored twice more to start the second half, pushing the score to 13-0, before Bard finally broke through on the score sheet, thanks to a great individual effort fromÂ
reigning rookie of the week,
Melissa Rosenthal.Â
The freshman received a pass behind the goal, where she used her speed and agility to get past two William Smith defenders in front of net, before quickly slotting a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for the Raptors' long goal of the evening.Â
Allie Flaherty (South Burlington, VT) led the way for the Herons with four goals and Ali Burns (Hingham, MA) added three goals and an assist in the effort.Â
The Raptors will have a quick turnaround, as the team hosts Union College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. You can follow that game right here via Live Stats.Â
