Bard tops Mount Saint Vincent twice in doubleheader

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team won a pair of games Thursday afternoon, beating Mount Saint Vincent, 4-2 in the first contest and 10-4 in the second.

The two wins move the Raptors to 3-5 on the season, while the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent fell to 4-7.

Bard opened the afternoon slow, as the team needed a few innings to get into the grove of things, which allowed the Dolphins to strike first.

The visitors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to a one out bases loaded walk to Luis Castillo (Yonkers, NY). The damage could have been much worse for the Raptors in the frame, but starting pitcher, Evan Richardson, settled down and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Raptors weren't down for long though, as they scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a, 2-1 lead. The runs came off back-to-back singles from Chris Blake and Jack Hawke and put Bard in front for the next few innings.

In the top of the fifth, Mount Saint Vincent leveled the score on the rare double steal. However, the tie score was short lived, as the Raptors responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to make the score line, 4-2, where it would finish.

Matt Lasky began the fifth inning with a single, before Adam Carafotes moved him to second on a groundout. Lasky scored on the next at bat, as the Dolphins second baseman made an error trying to handle a grounder from Dillon Daine.

The Raptors added their second run of the fifth inning thanks to another Dolphins' error, following a single from Blake.

From there, Rami Masani and Alex Bunnell combined to pitch the final two innings, as the pair held the visitors scoreless and earned the win and save for the Raptors respectively. Mount Saint Vincent's starter, Juan Brito (Harlem, NY) received the loss.

Blake finished 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs in the win for the Raptors.

Game Two of the day was a much easier affair for Bard, as the team finished the game with more runs than hits (10 runs/8 hits) and Mount Saint Vincent finished with more errors than runs (5 errors/4 runs).

After Bard fell behind early in the second inning, 2-0, it used a six-run third inning to make up for it, as the six-run explosion was more than enough to secure the win.

Blake, Rory Maglich, Preston Gittelson, David Schlosser and Lasky combined for the six RBIs in the frame.

Steven Hansen (Glendale, NY) singled in two runs for the Dolphins in the fourth inning to make the game, 6-4, but Mount Saint Vincent wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.

Bard added some insurance later in the game, as it scored once in the fifth and three more in the sixth to make it a, 10-4 game, squashing any comeback attempt.

Bunnell, after getting the save in the first game of the day, earned the win in Game Two for Bard. Starting pitcher, Tyler Reyes (Bronx, NY), got the loss for the Dolphins.

The Raptors were led in the contest by Schlosser, who finished with four RBIs, a hit and a run. Lasky and Blake each recorded two hits and an RBI during the win.

Up next for Bard is another doubleheader, as the Raptors host SUNY Poly on March 26th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and you can follow those games right here.
