Raptors lose rubber match at Caltech, 8-6

PASADENA, CA - The Bard College baseball team lost to the California Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon, 8-6, in the final game of a three game weekend series.

After splitting a pair of games Saturday, during which both teams struggled offensively, the rubber match contest Sunday featured a combined 14 runs on 26 hits as the Raptors' (1-4) and Caltech Beavers' (5-15) bats woke up.

Game Three of the weekend series could be best described as a game of scoring runs, as each team jumped out to big leads during the contest.

Caltech struck first, as the Beavers scored three runs in the third inning. The first came off a Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, IL) single and two more runs scored on a Cortland Perry (New York, NY) single.

Bard responded to the deficit slowly but surely over the game, as the team scored once in the fourth inning on a Rory Maglich single and again in the sixth, thanks to a single from Jack Hawke.

The Raptors were just getting started though, as the seventh inning saw the visitors jump out to their biggest lead of the game.

During the frame, Bard scored four runs thanks to singles from Adam Carafotes, Esteban Rivera, Dillon Daine and Hawke. The seventh inning scoring punctuated a 6-0 run for the Raptors, as they built a 6-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.

However, the Beavers of Caltech weren't going to be outdone by their opposition, as the team used two singles, a double, a sac fly and a fielder's choice groundout to put up five runs in the inning.

That made the score, 8-6, where the score line would finish, as Bard was unable to threaten the rest of the way.

The Raptors' starting pitcher, Kyle Zigner went 4.2 innings, allowing nine hits and just two earned runs in the no decision.

Reliever Rami Masani was charged with the loss for Bard, as he managed just one out, three earned runs, hit two batters and issued a walk during the seventh inning.

Garrett Levine (Columbus, OH) was credited with the win for the Beavers. He also scored the game-winning run off Alex Corado's (San Diego, CA) sac fly during the five run seventh.

Hawke led Bard with two RBIs on three hits on the day, while Maglich recorded an RBI on three hits.

McCarren led Caltech offensively with two RBIs on four hits. He also scored two runs and walked once.

The Raptors will wrap up their California spring break trip on March 21st, as they travel to Claremont,CA to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripes Colleges. First pitch will take place at 3:00 p.m. eastern time and you can follow it right here via Live Stats and Live Video.
