PASADENA, Calif. - The Bard College baseball team scored two in the eighth inning and two in the ninth to earn a split of a doubleheader at Caltech on Saturday.
The Raptors lost the first game, 2-1 in seven innings, and won the second game, 5-2, in nine.
All of the scoring in Game One came in the first inning, as it was a real pitchers' duel. Bard scored its only run in the top of the first.
David Schlosser singled with one out and went to second on an error. After he stole third,
Adam Carafotes walked, and Schlosser scored when Carafotes drifted off first and drew a pickoff throw. The ensuing rundown gave the speedy Schlosser the time he needed to cross the plate.
Caltech scored twice in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by freshman Connor Moffat (Charleston, WV) and a wild pitch.
Both pitchers settled down from there. For the Beavers, freshman lefty Jonah Krop (Santa Monica, CA) pitched a complete seven innings, yielding just three hits and striking out seven. Krop (2-4) gave up only a single to Schlosser and bunt singles to
Julian Gonzalez and
JP Fisher.
Bard sophomore
Evan Richardson (0-1) went the distance, too, giving up just four hits and striking out four. He held the Beavers to two hits over the final six innings.
Game Two was just as tight, and it stayed that way into the final three innings. An RBI single by Garrett Levine (Columbus, OH) gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and it remained that way until the seventh. Bard tied it up on consecutive singles by
Adam Carafotes,
Jeff Goldrosen and
Mike Pizzuto.
But Caltech came right back in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead on an RBI double by David Adams (Atlanta, GA). The Raptors were staring at another 2-1 deficit late.
This time they responded.
Matt Lasky walked with two outs and nobody on in the top of the eighth, and he scored on a long triple to right-center by Carafotes. That tied it. Pinch-hitter
Dylan Long followed with a single to right, and Bard led, 3-2, going into the bottom of the eighth.
Caltech didn't score, and Bard got two more in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Fisher and a run-scoring groundout by Schlosser, making it 5-2.
The Beavers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth against reliever
Alex Bunnell, who had entered in the seventh, and Bard went to sophomore lefty
Rami Masani. Masani induced a pop up, got a strikeout, and the game ended on a lineout to third. Bunnell (1-0) got the win, and Masani his first save.
Bard starter
Steve Marotta pitched a gritty six innings, giving up eight hits and two runs. Kai Kirk (San Jose, CA) gave up three runs over eight innings and took the loss for the Beavers, who are 4-15. Bard is 1-3.
Bard and Caltech will complete the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 3. You can follow it live right here.
