HARRISONBURG, VA - The Bard College men's volleyball team lost to Cairn University Friday night, 3-0, in the first of three games this weekend.
Set scores for the match were, 25-15, 25-21 and 25-15.
The first set opened with Bard (3-12) and Cairn (3-16) vying for control, as the Highlanders of Cairn were able to strike first.
With the score tied at 3-3, Cairn proceeded to score nine of the next 10 points to take a 12-4 lead, which it never relinquished the rest of the set.
The second set was a much closer affair between the teams, as Bard battled to stay in the contest.
The Raptors began the set playing much better, on their way to an early, 9-8 lead.
Cairn answered with a rally, scoring six of the next seven points to go up, 14-10.
Bard responded by cutting the lead down to two points at, 17-15, but the Highlanders quickly squashed any Raptors' rally by scoring the next four points to take a, 21-15 advantage, giving themselves some breathing room on their way to a 25-21 set win.
The third frame brought another early back and forth set, as neither side could differentiate itself from the other.
However, once the two sides rumbled to an 11-11 tie score, Cairn responded with a game-changing rally by scoring 13 of the next 15 points to take a, 24-13 lead late in the game.
The Highlanders soon after finished off the set and match with a, 25-15 win.
For the game, the Raptors hit .146 overall compared to Cairn's .289.
Alex Adams led the way for Bard with eight kills.
Tristan Kozul and
Stefan Briggs each finished with eight digs, while
Mahir Sheikh added 15 assists on the night.
The Highlanders were led by Andy Willits (Hatfield, PA), who finished with 13 kills. Matthew Gump (Kutztown, PA) collected 28 assists for Cairn University.
