ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team was defeated by St. Lawrence College, 3-1, Friday afternoon in a Liberty League contest.
With the loss, the Raptors' record moved to 3-8-1 overall on the year and 0-4-1 in the Liberty League. The Saints of St. Lawrence College meanwhile, improved to 6-4-3 overall and 4-0-2 in league play.
The Saints opened the scoring in the 10th minute, thanks to Tapshak Augustine (Abuja, Nigeria), who cleaned up a blocked cross that was bouncing around in front of goal.
St. Lawrence doubled its score in the 23rd minute off a successful penalty kick from Jethro Dede (New York, NY).
Bard answered with a goal of its own in the second half, as
Brendan Byrne single-handedly created the opportunity.
In the 59th minute, as the Saints held possession in their own defensive half, Byrne pressured the visitors' center back, which forced a pass back to the keeper.
Byrne kept up the pressure and charged toward the Saints' goalie. The keeper tried to juke to his right as he received the ball, but was too slow. Byrne slid in hard and popped the ball out away from the keeper, who couldn't recover in time. Byrne then slotted the ball into the open net to cut the deficit in half for Bard.
Over the next 25 minutes of the match, the Raptors controlled the flow of the game and had much of their possession in St. Lawrence's defensive half. The hosts just couldn't find an equalizer.
St. Lawrence sealed the match in the 88th minute with its third goal of the afternoon.
Taylor Bond finished the game with three saves for Bard, while Mike Smith (Syracuse, NY) made two saves for the Saints.
The Raptors will have a quick turnaround as the team is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Clarkson University. That match is scheduled for 2 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
