SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - A goal by senior Michelle Staples (Hanson, MA) broke a 1-1 tie in the 84th minute and gave the Union College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bard in the Liberty League opener for both teams on Saturday.
Union (3-3-2, 1-0 LL) carried the play throughout the game, outshooting Bard 27-4. But a goal by
Avalon Qian in the 22nd minute knotted the contest at 1-1 and it stayed that way until Staples became the hero.
Morgan Dominick (Poughkeepsie, NY) had given the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead before the game was 10 minutes old. But Qian tied it up off an assist from
Clara Gallagher.
Chloe Ramos made six saves in the first half for Bard;
Kelsey O'Brien made six saves in the second half. Bard had three shots on goal, and Kelsey Hartsoe (Wallingford, CT) stopped two of them.
