ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - With both teams playing solid defense and offensive opportunities hard to come by, something special from a super sub decided Thursday's season opener between the Bard and Albright women's soccer teams.
Just over five minutes after being inserted into the game in the second half, Bard junior
Gemma Godfrey got around a defender down the left wing and ripped a hard shot from a poor angle just inside the far post to give Bard a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.
The game then went back to the defensive struggle it was before Godfrey's strike, freshman keeper
Chloe Ramos snuffed out the few opportunities the visitors had, and Bard opened 2016 with a 1-0 victory. Bard outshot Albright, 13-7, but the Lions did produce seven corners to Bard's four.
In the end it came down to Bard making the most of one good opportunity.
Ramos,
Emily Tylki and
Miranda Reale were starters in their first games as freshman, and they were impressive, particularly Reale in the defensive third. Freshman
Gabby Duchaussee was among the seven other freshmen who played, and she produced two shots in her time out there. Veterans like
Avalon Qian (five shots) and
Carla Sanchez were solid and clearly still getting used to all their new teammates.
Ramos was called upon twice in the game to stop semi-breakaways, and she did the job assertively. She finished with three saves, while Albright's Payton Bogatch (Boonton, NJ) made six.
Bard will play two more home games this weekend, starting with another non-league game against College of Mount St. Vincent on Saturday at 2. Follow the game via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
NOTE: Issues with the live video stream at Ferrari Field have been rectified, and both games will be viewable this weekend.
