ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – In the three seasons since baseball returned to Bard after a 76-year absence, the number of times the Raptors have outhit, outpitched and outdefended the opposition in the same game can be counted on one hand.
That's due mostly to a small roster and a lack of pitching depth.
Things in Annandale have changed, though, and never was that more evident than on Sunday, when Bard rallied to defeat Brockport, 5-2, to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
See photo galleryBard outhit Brockport, 13-4, and outpitched them, too, holding an offense that was averaging more than 13 hits per game to just four. Defensively, Brockport had three errors, Bard had two.
The result was a quality win against an opponent that was in the "Others Receiving Votes" category of the most recent National College Baseball Writers Association/d3baseball.com Top 25.
Brockport (6-2) was unable to do much with Bard starter
Zach Hayes, who makes his living with off-speed stuff on the edges of the plate. Nor was Bard able to do much with junior starter Sam McCumiskey (Belfast, NY), and it was a scoreless game headed into the fifth.
Senior Eli Carrera (Rochester, NY) led off the top of the inning with a double down the left field line, and he scored on a single by Justin Valentino (Auburn, NY). Later, an errant pickoff throw by Hayes led to an unearned run, and it was 2-0 going to the bottom of the fifth. Hayes was done.
Freshman
Julian Gonzalez got things going for Bard with a leadoff bunt single in the bottom of the fifth. One out later,
JP Fisher doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. With two strikes,
Adam Carafotes tripled to center to tie it up. McCumiskey was done.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the top of the sixth against freshman reliever
Alex Bunnell. With one out and runners on second and third, Bunnell struck out Paul Ludden (Cicero, NY) looking, then induced Carrera to line out softly to second base.
Bard took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. The Raptors loaded the bases with none out on a walk by
Matt Lasky, a bunt single by
Preston Gittelson, and a hit batsman, in this case, pinch-hitter
Eswar Vinnakota, against reliever Jason Hellwig (Medina, NY).
Brockport went back to the bullpen, and Derick Fera (Lyons, NY) struck out Gonzalez and
David Schlosser, which brought up Fisher. Fisher hit a hard grounder through the right side to drive in two, and an infield error on a hot shot by Carafotes plated another run, and it was 5-2 entering the seventh inning.
From there, Bard turned to freshman lefty
Rami Masani, and he shut Brockport down with three innings of one-hit ball, with one strikeout and no walks. It was his first collegiate save.
Gittelson went 4-for-4. Fisher and Carafotes each went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Bunnell has pitched 2 1/3 innings so far and is 2-0.
Bard will host doubleheaders next weekend on Saturday and Sunday, against Hamilton and Mount St. Mary College, respectively. All four games can be followed live via Live Stats or Live Video.
