ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team was swept by Hamilton College in a doubleheader, 9-8 and 7-1, on Saturday. Both games went seven innings.
A five-run fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie and led the Continentals to victory in Game 1. A walk and a sacrifice put a runner on second with one out. A fielder's choice grounder to short became an unearned run when the throw to third was dropped, and that opened the door to four unearned runs, as Hamilton took an 8-3 lead.
Bard got one back in the fifth, when
Alec Montecalvo doubled and later scored on a single by
Matt Lasky. After Hamilton went down in the top of the sixth, Bard got two more in the bottom of the sixth.
A one-out single by
David Schlosser was followed by an RBI triple by
JP Fisher, and Fisher scored on a sacrifice fly by
Adam Carafotes to make it 8-6 through six.
Hamilton made it 9-6 in the top of the seventh, and Bard tried to put together a rally in its last at-bat. With one out, Lasky singled, and he stole second during a strikeout. With two outs,
Jeff Goldrosen singled to make it 9-7.
Rory Maglich pinch-ran for Goldrosen.
Pinch-hitter
Dylan Long singled to plate Maglich, and it was 9-8 - but a popup ended the game.
Bard outhit Hamilton 13-11 but had three errors. Junior catcher Brett Mele (Ringoes, NJ) went 4-for-5 with a triple and five RBI. Cole Dreyfuss (New York, NY) got the win, giving up four runs on eight hits over five innings.
Schlosser (2 RBI) and Lasky (1 RBI) had three hits apiece. Freshman
Evan Richardson (0-1) gave up four earned over 3.2 innings and took the loss.
Game 2 was all about Hamilton starter Dan DePaoli (Brewster, NY) who gave up just two hits and one unearned run over six innings. He walked five, but Bard left six runners on. The Continentals led 2-1 entering the sixth, but got three in the sixth and two in the seventh against the Bard bullpen.
Dean Rosenburg (Chappaqua, NY) went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the guests.
Jack Hawke and
Alec Montecalvo had Bard's only hits. For Montecalvo, an infield single in the seventh was the 100th hit of his career. Schlosser's 31-game on-base streak, which began last season, was snapped.
Zach Hayes gave up one earned run over four innings and took the loss.
Bard will be right back on Honey Field on Sunday for a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary College. Follow both games via Live Stats or Live Video right here. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
