ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – This is a big weekend for the volleyball teams from Elmira and Stevens. They went into Saturday's tri-match at Bard ranked eighth and fifth, respectively, with each having a match against nationally-ranked UC-Santa Cruz awaiting on Sunday in New Jersey.
It's possible Elmira and Stevens were so busy staring at each other, they overlooked Bard.
The Raptors took the first set from Elmira, 26-24, before falling in four sets. And the Raptors battled but lost to Stevens - but the matches were clearly their best in the United Volleyball Conference this year.
In between, Stevens beat Elmira in four sets.
Bard came out ready against Elmira, going up 12-9 and 19-18. Bard was down, 23-22, but took the set 26-24 on a kill by
Shane McDonald.
Bard hit .273 in the second set with 12 kills, but Elmira hit .400 with 16 kills and won it, 25-20. The Soaring Eagles dominated the final two sets, 25-11 and 25-16.
Matthew Buffum (Chesterfield, MO) had 13 kills for Elmira (17-5, 2-3 UVC), while Adam Dake (Victor, NY) had 41 assists. Mike Ellison (Victor, NY) had 11 digs.
For the Raptors, Alex Adams had 10 kills to lead the offensive attack, while picking up nine digs. Jesse Small and Shane McDonald each added five kills. Mahir Sheikh had a team-high 15 assists, while Kai Bernier-Chen contributed with 11 assists, five digs, and two blocks. Tyler Zowaski had 12 digs.After Stevens beat Elmira in a tight battle, the Ducks (16-4, 3-2 UVC) took the first set against Bard 25-10.
But Bard regained its fight and battled in the final two sets, losing them 25-20 and 25-21. That final set was tied at 20-20.
Dylan DeBoer (Vernon Hills, IL) had eight kills and 10 digs for Stevens, while John Eddins (Kula, HI) added 15 assists.
Adams again finished with 10 kills along with six digs. Small added nine kills, and McDonald had four. Sheikh had nine assists, while Bernier-Chen had 10. Zowaski had 14 digs.
