ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - What was possibly Bard's best defensive effort of the season unraveled in the final few minutes, and the Raptors lost a season-ending heartbreaker to RPI in overtime, 58-53, on Friday night.
The Raptors swarmed and cut off passing lanes and forced airballs, and even prompted RPI to turn it over three times in the second half on shot clock violations. They were suffocating.
Then senior center
Brandon Cunningham, playing in his final game, fouled out with four minutes left, and all heck broke loose.
RPI rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final 4:54 to force the OT, then outscored Bard 9-4 in the extra session to improve to 11-13 overall, 5-10 in the Liberty League.
Bard, which finishes the season at 9-16, 6-10, led by three at halftime and by 10 seven minutes into the second half. The lead bounced around between 11 and five from there, and it was 46-35 with 4:54 to go.
RPI rallied and Bard's offense started to sputter. It was a 14-3 run to end regulation, and Jonathan Luster (Essex, CT) almost hit a three at the buzzer which would have won it for RPI.
The Engineers scored first in overtime and never trailed again. Bard went 1-for-6 from the field in the extra period and turned it over, down three, with 11 seconds left. RPI outscored Bard 23-7 combined in the final 4:54 of regulation and overtime.
Freshman Tom Horvat (Cranston, RI) led the visitors with 18 points and six steals. Tyler Gendron (Merrimack, NH) scored seven of RPI's nine points in overtime and finished with 16.
Bard got 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists from
DeVahnte Mosley. Freshman
Armando Dunn had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Cunningham had eight points in his final game, and fellow senior
Zach Goodman had five points and a team-high five assists.
