ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - A 9-0 run over the final 3:23 of the game led the College of New Rochelle over Bard College Wednesday night, 57-49.
The Raptors (0-4) jumped out to an early lead, going up by a score of 17-5 early in the second quarter following a layup from
Megan Phelan.
But from that point until the end of the first half, it was all Blue Angels (2-1), who outscored Bard 16-6.Â
At halftime, the hosts clung to a two point lead, 23-21.Â
As the second half began, New Rochelle opened the quarter with a full-court press and forced Bard into some quick turnovers. The Blue Angels took advantage and jumped out to their biggest lead of the game, 33-25, following a layup from Dar'Neisha Brice (Great Mills, MD).Â
The Raptors didn't go down without a fight though, eventually tying the ballgame up at 44-44 with 6:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Following a three pointer from freshman
Caleigh DeCaprio, which gave Bard a 49-48 lead with 3:23 remaining, the Raptors offense disappeared. Bard was held scoreless the rest of the game, as they managed to just one field goal attempt over the final three minutes.
New Rochelle took advantage and went on the 9-0, capitalizing on turnovers late in the game to seal the victory.
Bard ended up losing the all-important turnover battle, 19-11, which resulted in 23 points for the Blue Angels compared to just 10 points for the Raptors. Â
The Raptors did win the rebound battle though, 51-46, and three players recorded double-digit rebound performances.
Alexis Akingbade led the way for Bard with 17 rebounds, nine of which were offensive. She also tied for the team lead with 12 points, along with DeCaprio.
Sarah Morris collected 11 boards to go with her seven points and Phelan tallied eight points and 10 rebounds.Â
The Blue Angels secured the victory thanks to Brice, who scored 22 points, which led all players. She also chipped in seven rebounds, five assists and recorded eight steals in 40 minutes of action.
The Bard College women's basketball team will return, December 3rd, as they travel to Clinton, NY to take on Hamilton College at 2 p.m. You can follow that game right here via Live Video and Live Stats.Â
