ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team suffered defeat Saturday afternoon, falling to Mount St. Mary College, 75-36.
The Raptors (0-2) were unable to get their offense kick-started all-day, shooting just 27% from the field. The Knights of Mount St. Mary on the other hand had no such struggles and shot 51% for the game.
From the beginning, Mount St. Mary (2-0) played strong, jumping out to a 16-5 first quarter lead. The Raptors couldn't buy a bucket in the first and didn't hit double digits until 20 seconds remained in the quarter.
Following an 18-10 first quarter score, the Raptors were unable to get within single digits the rest of the afternoon, leading to a 37-20 halftime lead for the Knights. As the second half began, Bard looked energized and outworked Mount St. Mary during the opening minutes of the third, getting offensive rebounds, drawing fouls and forcing the Knights into some bad shots.
Unfortunately for the Raptors, their own shots still weren't finding the basket and weren't able to cut into the lead. Eventually, the Knights got it together and started to blow the game open late in the third and into the fourth quarter.
Bard struggled to hold onto the ball all game. In the first half alone, they turned the ball over 14 times and finished the day with 26 turnovers. All those freebies led to points for the Knights, as Mount St. Mary outscored Bard, 34-4, in points off turnovers.
Mount St. Mary also won the points in the paint battle, 42-12, in addition to outscoring Bard's bench, 34-10.
Sarah Morris led Bard on the afternoon, she finished with a team-high nine points, while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Alexis Akingbade chipped in six points, while tying for the team lead in rebounds with eight.
Jordyn Hellpap (Hackensack, NJ) led the Knights with 15 points and Taylor Whiffen (Wading River, NY) added 14 points for the visitors.
Bard will return to action, November 22nd, at Cazenovia College. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
