Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Qian's strike leads Bard over Clarkson, 2-1

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.- Just a day after being shut out, the Bard College women's soccer team was desperately looking for some offense, and they got it on Saturday afternoon against Clarkson University.

The Raptors scored once in each half to pull out a 2-1 victory, their first Liberty League win of the season, and their second straight win over the Golden Knights.

It wasn't easy.

After playing on their heels for the first 20 minutes, when Clarkson carried the play, Bard's first shot on goal went in. Giuliana Scanni's efforts on the wing produced a corner kick. Her ensuing corner kick missed the head of both Avalon Qian and Dylan McDonald, but the resulting scrum sent the bouncing ball to Carla Sanchez. She volleyed a shot which glanced off a Clarkson defender and went in for a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.

The Golden Knights outshot Bard 6-3 in the first half but trailed, 1-0.

A hustle play early in the second half gave Clarkson the equalizer. Giulia Mahoney (Walworth, NY) outran a couple of Bard defenders to get to a long pass into the corner, and her feed across the goalmouth was booted in by Madison Kather (Amherst, NY) to knot the game at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.

It turned out to be a hustle play from Bard that decided the game just a few minutes later. Caroline Gluck sent a long ball from midfield toward the edge of the penalty area, and Avalon Qian burst past one Clarkson defender, then beat another defender and the keeper to the ball, slotting it in with the tip of her toe in the 56th minute.

Bard held Clarkson off the rest of the way, outshooting the Golden Knights 8-3 in the second half to improve to 6-4 overall, 1-2 in the Liberty League. Clarkson fell to 4-6, 0-3.

Elyse Green made two saves for Clarkson; Chloe Ramos made five for Bard.
