BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team was three outs away from a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, but the Raptors had to settle for a split with NYU in a non-league matchup.
Bard (5-21) lost the first game, 5-4, in 10 innings - then rallied to win the second game, 7-6, with three runs in the top of the sixth.
In Game 1, Bard trailed 3-1 in the top of the fourth, but
David Schlosser smacked a bases-loaded single to left, which when coupled with a throwing error, cleared the bases and gave Bard a 4-3 lead. It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh.
NYU's Adrian Spitz (Los Angeles, CA) led the inning off with a double down the right field line, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie it, 4-4, in the Violets' last turn at bat.
Bard had runners at first and third in the top of the ninth but couldn't push a run across. In the bottom of the 10th, freshman Jonathan Iaione (Bernardsville, NJ) reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a walk-off single by Michael Vokulich (Encino, CA).
The Raptors got another solid start from freshman
Zach Hayes, who gave up four runs over six innings. Matthew Millus (Old Tappan, NJ) won the game in relief for NYU (14-19).
Schlosser went 4-for-5 with two RBI and
Adam Carafotes went 2-for-5 for Bard.
The second game was a thriller, too. It was tied, 4-4 , through three innings, but the Violets pushed it to 6-4 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Because the first game of the twinbill was scheduled for seven innings and went 10, the second game was rescheduled for seven from nine. The Raptors were six outs away from being swept.
In the top of the sixth, red-hot Schlosser singled and stole second. One out later, Carafotes was hit with a pitch, and
Alec Montecalvo singled to make it 6-5 and chase NYU starter Cameron Serapilio-Frank (Rochester, NY).
Nick Kifyak greeted NYU reliever Jarret Weiss (Studio City, CA) with an RBI single to tie it, 6-6, and
Jeff Goldrosen singled to load the bases.
Millus relieved Weiss, and Hawke singled to left to drive in the eventual winning run.
Quinn McInerney pitched 2.1 innings of relief, yielding just an infield single, to pick up the win. Schlosser went 2-for-3 and has an 11-game hitting streak. Hawke went 3-for-4, while Montecalvo,
Sam Grumet and
JP Fisher added two hits apiece.
These teams will meet again on Sunday. They'll play a single game on Honey Field at Bard starting at 1 p.m. You can follow it via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
