ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team built a 9-0 lead through six innings, then hung on to defeat Southern Vermont College, 9-7, in a non-league game on Thursday afternoon.
See photo galleryBard (4-20) got a good start from
Alec Montecalvo and some timely hitting in the early innings to build a lead. Sophomore
Jack Hawke continued his torrid hitting, and it started with a triple in the second inning. He scored on a single by
Steve Marotta, and Marotta scored on a single by
Quinn McInerney to make it 2-0 heading to the third inning.
In the third,
David Schlosser singled and scored on a two-out double by
Dylan Long to make it 3-0. And in the fifth,
JP Fisher walked and later scored on an RBI single by
Adam Carafotes.
Montecalvo was cruising. He set the Mountaineers (10-10) down in order in the sixth. He was done for the day having yielded four hits, three walks and no runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bard put five more up on the board to take a 9-0 lead.
Matt Lasky walked and Hawke doubled to get things started. Marotta singled to drive in a run, McInerney plated Hawke with a bunt single, Marotta scored on an error, and Carafotes drove in a run with a single to center. Before it was all over, Montecalvo drove in a another run with a sacrifice fly.
The Raptors gave up an unearned run in the seventh to make it 9-1, and in the eighth things got a little sweaty. Southern Vermont loaded the bases with no outs, then got a two-run double from freshman Eric Fields (Lakewood, CA). Two singles and an RBI groundout made it 9-6, and the Raptors got out of the inning only after a great diving play by Marotta at third base.
In the ninth,
Jeff Goldrosen gave up a two-out solo homer to Roland Hernandez (Pica Rivera, CA), but collected the final out on a groundout to the pitcher to pick up the save.
Carafotes went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Hawke went 3-for-4 a homer away from the cycle. Marotta and McInerney had three hits and two RBI apiece.
Bard next plays a three-game set with NYU this weekend. They'll play two at MCU Park in Brooklyn, where NYU plays its home games, on Saturday. Then the teams will head North for a single game at Honey Field on Sunday at 1. Live Stats and Live Video are available for all three games.
