Raptors top Sage for first win of season

KINGSTON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's lacrosse team scored 12 seconds into the game and never relinquished the lead in a 17-11 non-league win over Sage on Tuesday night.

It was Bard's first win of the season.

Alexandra Clarke scooped up the opening draw control and took off, beating Sage keeper Jackie St. Pierre (Averill Park, NY). It spurred Bard to a 5-1 lead less than eight minutes into the game.

But Sage (0-6) scored three straight goals to make it 5-4, prompting a Bard time out. The Raptors came out of the time out flying and scored three straight goals, and Sage stuck once more in the final seconds to make it 8-5 Bard at halftime.

The turning point of the game was the first few minutes of the second half. The Raptors scored four straight goals to make it 12-5. Sage cut it to 12-7 but never got closer.

Bard outshot Sage, 38-20, and had a 31-24 edge in ground balls. St. Pierre had a good game in goal for Sage, though, making 14 saves.

Joanna Regan led Bard with four goals and an assist. Clarke had four goals, four ground balls, four caused turnvovers and seven draw controls. Avalon Qian and Hannah Durham each scored three times, Hallie Nolan scored twice, and Gemma Godrey added one on a free position shot.

Monica Koralus (Verbank, NY) led Sage with five goals and two assists.

The Raptors dive right back into Liberty League action this weekend. They play at Skidmore on Friday at 4, and at RPI on Saturday at 2.
