ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team came oh-so-close to winning its first Liberty League game on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't to be.
In Game 1, St. Lawrence senior Mark Syron (Syracuse, NY) hit a two-out double down the right field line to score Mic Regan (New Rochelle, NY) in the bottom of the seventh to give the Saints a 3-2 victory.
In Game 2, Bard got down 5-0, got up 7-5, then eventually lost 15-7.
An unearned run in the top of the first in Game 1 gave Bard a 1-0 lead, but St. Lawrence tied it on an RBI groundout by Syron in the bottom of the first. Bard took the lead on an RBI single by
Lee Perry in the top of the second, but it was 2-2 after an unearned run in the bottom of the second.
It stayed that way until Syron's bottom of the seventh heroics.
Alec Montecalvo (0-2) took the hard luck loss pitching 6 2/3 innings of seven-hit ball. He walked three and struck out five. St. Lawrence starter Andrew Schreyack (1-1) pitched a complete game three-hitter, walking two and striking out four. Regan and Syron had two hits apiece.
In Game 2, St. Lawrence (8-1) jumped on Bard starter
JP Fisher in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on seven hits. But Bard (0-9) scored seven runs on four hits and an error - all with two outs - in the top of the second to take a 7-5 lead. Perry, Fisher and
Jeff Goldrosen had RBI singles, but the big blow was a bases-loaded triple to right-center by
Adam Carafotes. That knocked St. Lawrence pitcher Jake Farrell (Scheffield, MA) out of the game.
His replacement, Ben Jenkins (South Burlington, VT) was stellar. He gave up three hits and no runs over 7 1/3 with one walk and one strikeout to pick up the win. St. Lawrence scored one in the third to cut the deficit to 7-6, then took the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run double by Adam Reichel (Camillus, NY).
For Bard, Perry went 2-for-4 and
Nick Kifyak went 1-for-4 with a double.
Up next for Bard is a makeup doubleheader with Elmira at Honey Field on Wednesday at 2. Both games are scheduled for seven innings. Follow both live right here.
