ANNANDALE, N.Y. - There was a varsity baseball game played at Bard College on Saturday afternoon. Two, actually.
There were some goosebumps as the Raptors took the field, especially they played their first two seasons at many venues, none of them all that close to Annandale.
Liberty League foe St. Lawrence University has played the role of spoiler so far. The Saints beat Bard twice, 8-2 and 11-3, although there are two more games on Sunday afternoon.
The first game was tight, until St. Lawrence broke it open with four in the sixth and one in the seventh. It was 3-2 after three innings and stayed that way until the sixth. The Saints got an excellent pitching performance from sophomore Sam Downes (Shelburne Falls, MA), who pitched a complete game seven-hitter with four walks, two strikeouts and he yielded two earned runs.
Kyle Liszewski (Clarence, NY) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Chris Fernandez (Bronx, NY) drove in two runs.
Dylan Long battled the whole way and eventually ran out of gas in the sixth with well over 100 pitches. He gave up five runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts.
Alec Montecalvo drove in both Bard runs with a two-run single in the third, and
Adam Carafotes went 1-for-2 with a double.
St. Lawrence (6-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings and cruised to an 11-3 win in the second game. Alex Dermody gave up two runs on three hits over six, and Mark Syron went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
Jeff Goldrosen went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Montecalvo went 2-for-4 for the Raptors, 0-7.
Sunday's doubleheader starts at noon on Sunday. Follow the games via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
