POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Bard College women's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Old Westbury on Tuesday night.
With the game tied, freshman Danielle Weir (North Massapequa, NY) was fouled just outside Bard's offensive zone and the restart occurred with 14 seconds left in the game. She ran down the right side, made a wide circle around the Bard goal, then fired a shot over the shoulder of Bard goalie Kaylynn Tran with one second remaining. The Panthers were a player down at the time.
It culminated a big second-half comeback for Old Westbury (1-0). Bard led 2-1 at halftime, then got goals from
Avalon Qian and
Alexandra Clarke in the first 10 minutes of the second half to go up, 4-1. And the Raptors led 5-2 when
Gemma Godfrey scored an unassisted goal with 16:39 left in the game.
But Old Westbury scored five straight goals over the next nine-plus minutes to take a 7-5 lead.
Bard responded with a player-up goal from freshman Ruquiyah Mukarram, who scooped up a rebound off a
Joanna Regan shot that was blocked and put it home with 4:16 left. Regan tied it at 7-7 with an unassisted goal with just 97 seconds left in the game.
The diminuitive (5-foot-1) Weir ended it with her second goal of the game. Ashley Gugliuzzo (Oakdale, NY) made six saves for Old Westbury.
Tran made five saves for the Raptors. Clarke scored twice and Regan had a goal and an assist. Four freshmen scored for Bard - Qian, Godfrey, Mukarram and
Philippine Alba.
Up next for the Raptors is a non-league game at College of Mount St. Vincent on Friday afternoon.
