Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

16th-ranked St. Lawrence escapes Bard with double-overtime victory

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - When coach Andy McCabe started building the Bard College men's soccer program three years ago, he knew what a painful, difficult and ultimately rewarding experience it would be.

You can classify the start of the 2015 Liberty League season as painful.

It started with a 1-0 loss to 15th-ranked RPI last weekend. It continued Friday with a disheartening 3-2 loss to Clarkson. On Saturday was the coup de grace - a double-overtime loss to two-time defending Liberty League champion and 16th-ranked St. Lawrence, 2-1.

And Bard led both games this weekend in the second half. It's agony.

Still, some perspective might be necessary. Agony for Bard men's soccer in Liberty League play meant losses of 4-0, 6-0 and 8-0 in its first four seasons in the league. Now agony has taken a different form, but it's still agony.

Saturday's game was scoreless at halftime, with the Saints (8-2-2, 2-1-0 LL) holding a 7-3 advantage in shots. But Bard took its first-ever lead against St. Lawrence in the 51st minute.

Nick Shenberger got briefly away from a St. Lawrence defender in the corner and scooted along the goal line toward the near post. Just as he got close, he flicked a short pass to an onrushing Brendan Byrne, who one-timed it with his left foot for a 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence tied it in the 59th minute, when Jethro Dede (New York, NY) beat Taylor Bond from the middle of the box, unassisted.

It stayed that way through the end of regulation time, and through the first overtime.

Two minutes into the second overtime, Shenberger got loose on a mini-breakaway and keeper Ryan Roethel (Monroe, NY) got a hand on the shot to push it wide. A couple of minutes later, Bard lost a player to a red card, and in the 105th minute, Edward Gonzalez (Central Falls, RI) ended it off a scramble in front.

Both keepers finished with four saves. The Raptors are 5-5-1 overall, 0-3-0 in the Liberty League. It's probably little consolation, but Bard had never put together consecutive one-goal games in Liberty League play before this weekend, and now they have three in a row.

They'll hope for a better result at Union next Saturday at 2.
