TROY, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team is still looking for its first Liberty League victory after RPI swept a pair on Sunday afternoon, 4-2 and 8-3.

With four games left in the 2014 season, the Raptors have endured the agony of four two-run losses and three one-run losses in league play - and they even have a tie against conference leader Union College.

After giving up 26 runs in Saturday's doubleheader against RPI, the Raptors' pitching, hitting and defense all improved in Sunday's twinbill, but not enough to pull one of the games out.

In the first game Sunday, JP Fisher led off the game with a double and scored on Quinn McInerney's sacrifice bunt. But RPI scored two in the first, one in the third and one in the fourth to lead 4-1 entering the sixth inning.

Bard cut it to 4-2 in the sixth with an unearned run, then loaded the bases in their last at-bat in the top of the seventh with one out. The Engineers got out of it with a strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the game.

Fisher gave up four runs on nine hits over six innings and took the loss. Alec Montecalvo went 3-for-3, while Adam Carafotes and McInerney drove in one run apiece.

In the second game, Bard was up 3-0 in the sixth, but RPI got two in the sixth, four in the seventh and two in the eighth.

The Raptors took the lead in the first again. McInerney walked and went to third on Jack Hawke's double. Montecalvo followed with a single to make it 1-0.

In the fourth, Bard took a 2-0 lead on a single by Montecalvo, a single by Carafotes, and a double by Dominic Stegall. And it became 3-0 in the top of the sixth when Hawke singled, went to third on yet another Montecalvo single and scored on a squeeze bunt by Zach Ward.

To that point in the game, freshman Dylan Long had kept RPI in check. He finally ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth, yielding a two-out, two-run single to Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA), but he left the game in the seventh with Bard still up, 3-2.

RPI loaded the bases against Bard reliever Aaron DePetris in the bottom of the seventh, and freshman Steven Wells (Yardley, PA) delivered a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run single to give the Engineers a lead they did not relinquish. The final score was 8-3.

Montecalvo went 7-for-7 on the day with an RBI and a run scored. Stegall went 3-for-4 in the second game, and Hawke went 2-for-4.

RPI is 22-10 overall, 8-6 in the Liberty League and still in the hunt for the playoffs. Bard is 3-22-1, 0-16-1 in the Liberty League.

The Raptors have four more opportunities to get that first Liberty League win against another potential playoff team, Vassar College. The teams will play two on Saturday at Dutchess Stadium, and two on Sunday at Vassar. Follow all four games via Live Stats right here.
