Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Bard senior
Billy Williams has heard plenty of good-natured barbs during his four years on the men's volleyball team about his injury history. Sometimes it was his shoulder, sometimes it was his back, but Billy always seemed to be nursing something.
On Tuesday night he shared Senior Night with his partner in crime for four years,
Henry Kasiske. Kasiske has been an ironman, producing a school-record 3,000-plus assists in his career with one weekend worth of matches left.
In Tuesday night's match against Sage, nobody could believe it when it was Kasiske who ended up on the floor in agony - twice - and he hobbled his way through the end of the match with a lower-leg injury.
After Bard had completed a 3-1 victory, Williams allowed himself a little smile.
"It was
him this time," Williams said with a laugh.
There was plenty to smile about after this one. The Raptors had been off since March 15 and looked rejuvenated, defeating Sage 25-18, 15-25, 25-23 and 25-21. Williams had 16 killls and eight assists, and Kasiske produced 36 assists and 12 digs. He'll enter this weekend at the MIT Scramble seven aces shy of the school career record currently held by Nick Chan (152).
The match turned in the third set. Bard got up 4-1, then Sage rallied to pull even and eventually pulled ahead. It was 19-16 Sage when Bard coach
Stefanie Carrington called a time out to talk to her crew.
The Raptors rallied and tied it at 19-19 and 20-20, but the Gators pulled ahead again, 22-20. A kill from
Shane McDonald, an attack error by Sage and a kill from
Jesse Small made it 23-22 Bard, so it was Sage calling the time out this time.
Sage tied it 23-23 on a service error, but a kill from Williams (off an assist from Kasiske) created match point, and Kasiske and
Alex Adams clinched the set with a block of Sage's Dylan Krowicki, who had 22 kills but got stuffed on that big one.
McDonald finished with nine kills and six digs, Small had eight kills and three digs, and Adams produced five kills, three aces and six digs. Bard is 8-20. Sage is 6-15.
The Raptors finish the 2014 season at the MIT scramble on Friday and Saturday. Bard will play four matches, including three more against teams ranked the American Volleyball Coaches Association Div. III Top 15. The matches against No. 6 UC-Santa Cruz, No. 8 MIT and No. 10 Elmira will bring the number of ranked teams Bard has played this season to 11.
Hopefully Kasiske's leg is OK. It's always something with him.
