ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team picked up its second United Volleyball Conference win of the season on Saturday at the final crossover event of the season, hosted by Elmira College.
The Raptors were swept by 10th-ranked Nazareth (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) in the morning session, then later battled to defeat D'Youville 3-1, by set scores of 33-31, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-15.
In the opener, Nazareth improved to 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the UVC by hitting .321. Bard had a 13-10 lead in the first set, but trailed the whole way in both the second and third sets. Sophomore Bobby Beeman (Big Flats, NY) and junior Brody Cord (Loomis, CA) led the Golden Eagles with six kills apiece. Sophomore Cody Nelson (North Hills, CA) had 19 assists, and Corey Randolph (Columbus, OH) and Andre Richardson (Hampton, GA) had six digs apiece.
For Bard, it was the beginning of a big day for freshman
Alex Adams, who had 10 kills and four digs.
Henry Kasiske had 14 assists and led the team with five digs.
Adams had a career-high 17 kills, four aces, nine digs and hit .343 to lead Bard over D'Youville, 3-1. The Raptors fought off six set points in the first set, rallying from a 31-30 deficit to win on consecutive kills by
Shane McDonald,
Billy Williams and Adams.
Three straight points by the Spartans (2-13, 0-8 UVC) broke a 22-22 tie and won the second set, but Bard took charge in the third set, even though it was close, not relinquishing the lead after a 5-5 tie and taking it, 25-22.
The Raptors put together one of their best-hitting sets of the season (.417) in the fourth, taking charge early on and cruising to a 25-15 clinching victory.
Junior Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY) led D'Youville with 18 kills (.410) and 11 digs.
It wasn't just Adams who had a career high for Bard on Saturday, as classmate
Shane McDonald had 13 kills against D'Youville, and career-high for him, and hit .379.
Jesse Small added 10 kills, Kasiske had eight kills, 50 assists and a team-high 13 digs. McDonald and Small had 11 digs apiece, and
Daniel Gagne had 10. It was one of Bard's best performances of the season.
