AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Bard College baseball team was swept by Colby College, 8-1 and 10-1, in a doubleheader on Sunday.
In Game 1, Colby (2-0) got one run in each of the first three innings, and it was 3-0 when Bard starter
Gabe Kleiman left after four innings. But the Mules exploded for five runs in the sixth, keyed by a two-run homer from Daniel Csaplar (Winchester, MA) and a two-run single from Alec Finigan (Milton, MA). Jason Buco (Methuen, MA) also homered for the winners.
Junior Scott Goldberg (Valley Stream, NY) struck out 10 and gave up just two hits over six innings for Colby.
Kleiman (1-1) took the loss. He gave up four runs on six hits and struck out seven with no walks over four innings.
Bard's only run came on a solo homer from
Alec Montecalvo with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Dylan Long and
Tom Danz had the Raptors' only other hits; for Long it was a double.
In Game 2, Bard starter
JP Fisher went 5 2/3 innings without yielding a hit - then it all unraveled. The Mules scored nine runs on four hits and two errors in the top of the sixth and cruised to a 10-1 win.
Fisher scored Bard's only run in the first inning. He singled, stole second, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Gabe Kleiman, and scored on a two-out infield single by
Adam Carafotes.
Jack Hawke went 2-for-3 for the Raptors, and Kleiman tripled.
Greg Ladd (Danvers, MA) gave up one run on seven hits over seven innings for Colby, and Buco homered again.
Bard (3-4) will play Hamilton next; due to the weather forecast, the doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to Monday at 9 a.m. Follow @BardAthletics on Twitter for updates.
